This V Neck Crochet Sweater Pattern is fabulously easy to make and a dream to wear! I’m so excited to add this pattern to my Mystical Collection, which is so full of this glorious texture!

Cosy, warm and oh so simple. This simple crochet sweater pattern comes with the option for a V neck or straight neck and a deliciously deep rib that goes all the way down the sleeves to make them modern and simple yet classical too. Worked in simple crochet stitches and packed full of texture, it’s such a joy to crochet.

In this post you’ll find everything you need to know how to make this V neck crochet sweater pattern, including materials, stitches, a detailed video tutorial and free written pattern for blog subscribers.

A person stands outside in a grassy area, wearing a mustard-colored v-neck crochet sweater and blue jeans, smiling at the camera.

I now have quite a selection of different styles of Adult Crochet Sweater Patterns, but this one is very different to any I’ve done before.

The pattern includes instructions for adult sizes XS to 5XL and is easily adjustable in length and width to make it the perfect fit for you.

These easy sweaters make the perfect winter wardrobe staple! Go neutrals to emphasise the texture of the beautiful stitches or go for it and make a statement sweater with a huge pop of colour!

Yarn

To make the v neck crochet sweater pattern I used Amigo XL from Hobbii which is 100% Acrylic (109yds/100m/50g).

Amigo XL is a really soft yarn with wonderful, airy volume. It is produced from 100% HB acrylic of very high quality and comes in an enormous selection of colors.

Amigo XL has double the thickness of Amigo and so you will see quick results. The soft yarn is suitable for lots of creative, colorful projects. It does not scratch and is therefore great to use for blankets, sweaters, hats, scarves, etc. The airy yarn will keep you warm and won’t get too heavy.

It’s a category 4, medium weight yarn which works up nice and quickly. Check our handy yarn weight chart and guide to find out more about yarn weights and categories.

I used the color Curry for my v neck sweater but there are 60 to choose from so go for it!

You can use any yarn that you like bearing in mind that you need to make sure you meet the gauge. Some other great options are:

For my straight neck sweater, which you can see in the image below, I used Touch of Alpaca in Dusty Blue.

  • Quick and easy: works up quickly using worsted weight yarn.
  • Great For Gifts: a wonderful gift to crochet and give at any time of the year.
  • Uses only basic stitches: single crochet and half double crochet is all you need to know, making it ideal for anyone new to crochet or those wanting a quick, relaxing project.

A woman with short brown hair, wearing a light blue V-neck crochet sweater pattern, blue jeans, and a brown belt, stands in front of a door, holding a brown shoulder bag. She has a slight smile and touches her hair.

The real beauty of this pattern is that it uses just basic crochet stitches (just half double crochet and single crochet), has a super easy construction and is quick to make too. Even the v neck, which looks complicated is simply made by working one side at a time, making gradual increases.

The sweater features as part of my Mystical Collection that is all being released beginning September 2024 – it would be amazing if you could join me!

Getting Started: Materials Needed for Your Easy Crochet Sweater

Sizing

Sizes: XS (S, M, L, XL) (2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL)

To fit chest sizes: 30 (34, 38, 42, 46) (50, 54, 58, 62) inches.

With finished garment chest sizes: 33 (36.5, 40, 45, 49) (52.5, 57.5, 61, 64.5) in

The sweater is designed to have a small amount of ease (meaning that it is bigger than your body measurements) all over with straight sleeves.

How much yarn do I need to crochet a quick sweater?

This sweater is designed with either a V neck or straight neck.

The straight neck will use slightly more yarn than the V neck.

There are numerous options for adding length to the sweater body, cuff and sleeves to make it perfect for you but make sure to order plenty of yarn if you are making adjustments to the pattern.

The following yarn amounts are estimated as a total as the pattern is written assuming a single colour is used, with a straight neck, to the length of body and sleeves as in the pattern.

Sizes: XS (S, M, L, XL) (2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL)

You will require approximately 865 (970, 1080, 1185, 1295) (1400, 1510, 1615, 1725) metres, 945 (1060, 1180, 1295, 1415) (1530, 1650, 1765, 1885) yards of yarn to crochet the sweater.

This is 9, (10, 11, 12, 14) (15, 16, 17, 18) balls of the recommended yarn.

Crochet Terms You’ll Need to Know

Glossary and Abbreviations

beg – beginning

blo – back loop only

ch(s) – chain(s)

ch-sp(s) – chain space(s)

flo – front loop only

rep – repeat

RS – right side

sp – space

ss/sl st – slip stitch

Stitches

The pattern is written in standard US terms and uses the following crochet stitches:

sc – single crochet (UK dc – double crochet)

hdc – half double crochet (UK htr – half treble crochet)

Special Stitches

I love experimenting with texture in crochet and so was so pleased to come up with this stitch pattern!

It uses beginner stitches (half double crochet) in various loops of the stitch. You alternate the front loop only, back loop only and 3rd loop to create a wonderful texture that looks far more complicated than it really is!

I love it so much that I’ve also used it on my sweater scarf with sleeves, my chunky crochet blanket pattern, my free crochet fingerless gloves pattern and my simple crochet top pattern, plus I have more designs in the works coming soon!

It also works brilliantly in rounds too! My Mystical Hat pattern is such fun and makes great gifts too 🙂

3rd loop

Extra loop created on hdc from the yarn over. When working in rows it’s the first loop you come to when looking at the stitch. When working in rounds it will be the furthest away from you at the back of your crochet.

flo – front loop only

To work the front loop only, turn your work so that the top is facing you to see the front and back loops. Work into the front loop by inserting the hook into the loop of the ‘V’ nearest you.

blo – back loop only

To work the back loop only, turn your work so that the top is facing you to see the front and back loops. Work into the back loop by inserting the hook into the loop furthest from you.

Foundation half double crochet (Fhdc)

Step 1: Ch2, yarn over, insert hook into second ch from hook, yarn over and pull up a loop. [3 loops on hook]

Step 2: Yarn over and pull up another loop i.e. ch1. This creates the first “chain” in your foundation row. [still 3 loops on hook]

Step 3: Yarn over and pull through all three loops to complete the first Fhdc.

Step 4: Next stitch and subsequent stitches: Yarn over, insert hook into “chain” created in Step 2, yarn over and pull up a loop. [3 loops on hook]

Step 5: Yarn over and pull up another loop i.e. ch1. This creates the next “chain” in your foundation row. [still 3 loops on hook]

Step 6: Yarn over and pull through all three loops to complete the next Fhdc.

Repeat Steps 4, 5 and 6 as required.

Making Your Simple Crochet Sweater Perfect For You

Once you have chosen the correct chest size you’d like to make, the rest of the design is easy to adjust to fit as you would like it to.

The Sweater is designed to have a small amount of ease all over with straight sleeves.

The garment is worked from the top down so it is simple to change the length of both the Body and the Sleeves as you’d like.

LENGTH

Main Body Length: To adjust the length, you can work more or less rows of the Body at the Front and Back, making sure to work a matching amount for both.

Bottom Rib: you can adjust the Bottom Rib length by working more or less stitches in the Join as You Go Method.

If you change either of these lengths then please be mindful that your Side Rib Panel stitch count will not match the written pattern.

Sleeve Length: You can adjust the Sleeves by working as many or as few rows of the Sleeves before breaking the yarn and seaming. Make sure to work a matching number of rows for each sleeve.

WIDTH

Body Width: I would advise against adjusting the Centre Back and Front Panels stitch count as these are very specific for the neckline!

If you would like to change the width of your sweater then you can do so by working more or less rows of the Side Rib Panels on either side.

Make sure to work a matching number of rows on both Side Rib Panels to make sure the sweater is even.

Sleeve Armhole Depth: You can adjust the armhole by working more or less stitches for the Sleeve when you join. Make sure to work an even number of stitches and place them in the centre of the work.

Before you jump into crocheting your sweater, take a moment to read through the pattern notes—it’s a game-changer!

These handy insights will not only simplify your pattern-reading journey but also ensure a smoother crochet experience. You’ll find helpful tips on deciphering the sizing, customisation and more.

Trust me, a quick peek at these notes will set you up for crochet success!

  • A ch1 at the beg does not count as a st.
  • The pattern is worked in turned rows.
  • Read through the entire pattern before beginning.
  • Before you start, go through the pattern and highlight/mark the stitch and row counts that correspond to the size you are making (this will make your life much easier!).
  • Make sure that you are familiar with all of the stitches in the abbreviations list before you begin.
  • Instructions are given for the smallest size, with larger sizes in brackets ( ). E.g. XS (S, M, L, XL) (2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL).
  • If an instruction does not apply to a particular size then a – is used instead of a number. E.g. – (-, 4, 4, 5) (5, 5, 6, 6) means that the XS and S sizes do not apply to this instruction.
  • Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each Row. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous Row.
