Crochet Spike Stitch Pattern

A crochet spike stitch is created by working simple crochet stitch down into 2, 3, 4 or as many rows below as you like! They are often formed using a US single crochet but as you’ll see here you can use any height of stitch you like and make them as long as you like.

As you can see below, the double crochet spike stitch pattern is a great way to introduce drama and color to your crochet project without having to change color in the middle of a row or round.

Double crochet spike stitch pattern

US crochet terms.

This is the way I used the spike stitch in my blanket I designed. If you want to just work plain rows of stitches underneath your spike stitches then go for it! There are so many ways you can use this great stitch!

Using 2 colors of your choice. (I used the shades detailed below).

Foundation chain: using Yarn E, create a chain of any multiple of 3+1.

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, and each to end.

Change to Yarn C.

Row 2: ch4 (counts as st and ch1), skip 1 st, *dc in next 2 sts, ch1, skip 1 st; rep from * to last st, dc in last st.

Row 3: ch1, sc in next st, ch1, skip 1 st, *sc in next 2 sts, ch1, skip 1 st; rep from * to last st, sc in last st.

Row 4: Rep row 82.

Change to Yarn E.

Row 5: ch1, sc in next st, dc in skipped st of row 1 (working over the chains of previous rows), *sc in next 5 sts, dc in skipped st of row 1 (working over the chains of previous rows); rep from * to last 4 sts, sc in last 4 sts.

Repeat Rows 2 – 5 as many times as you’d like to create the pattern shown above.

Make a double crochet spike stitch blanket

If you’d like to make a double crochet spike stitch blanket just work a chain of a multiple of 3+1 to decide on the width of your project.

Then repeat the pattern as above for as many sets of the color sequence as you’d like to create the length of the blanket.

If you’d prefer not to have any holes in the blanket then just replace the ch1 spaces with a stitch to match the height of the row instead.

Can I crochet a granny spike stitch?

Yes you can! There are lots of ways to use a spike stitch (which basically just means an elongated stitch that you ‘spike’ down into rows or rounds further down your project.

I love this version of the granny spike stitch – it’s a great twist on a really simple stitch that will transform a project!

Another great way to use the ‘spike’ concept is for the crochet larksfoot stitch which I have used for lots of stashbuster crochet blankets over the years. It looks really similar but is slightly different if you look closely.

Materials

Along with your yarn, you will need the following:

• 4.5mm (US G+) crochet hook- my favourites are Furls Streamline Swirl crochet hooks or Clover Amour crochet hooks.
• Scissors
• Tapestry Needle
• Stitch markers
