Corner to corner crochet squares are so versatile, fun and easy! You can create this easy C2C square pattern featuring a crochet rainbow, cloud, sun and rain showers in any yarn weight you like and use it as part of a blanket, pillow or even a wall hanging!
The c2c pattern comes with options to use different weights of yarn to make with a 12 inch or 8.5 inch square so is great to use for larger crochet afghans or fun little home decor projects depending on which size you make.
If you’re new to the method then make sure to read my how to corner to corner crochet tutorial – it shows you how to work the stitch blocks, increase, decrease and change colours neatly ready for this project.

About this rainbow and cloud C2C square pattern
I absolutely love making crochet blankets from square motifs and so when I was invited to design a c2c square for the Community Garden Blanket crochet along of course I said yes!
The crochet along is running throughout September and October of 2022 and you can join to collect all of the corner to corner motif designs as they are released or you can purchase the entire Ebook right away!
Exclusive c2c Ebook!
Community Garden Blanket
- Get all 20 c2c designs to make the blanket
- Written and photo tutorial of joining method and border
PLUS – 4 bonus square designs!
The free version of my design is launching from 12th September 2022 until the end of the CAL so if it’s that time then scroll down to find out how to download your copy.
Not only is the square great to use together with the other garden themed designs but I think it would be perfect as a crochet gift for a new baby too on its own!
You could create a baby blanket by working one of these rainbow crochet squares and then adding some plain c2c crochet squares around it in rainbow colours.
Or you could add the suggested border, some tassels or fringe and create a really cute wall hanging for a baby nursery.
Yarn
You can use any yarn you like for this c2c square. The pattern will just come out a different size depending on what you choose.
Small Version of the C2C square pattern
I made my version in Yarn and Colors Must Have Minis 100% cotton, 125m/50g. They are great becasue they come in 10g balls and that’s enough for each of the colours apart from White which needs a 50g ball.
If you want an acrylic option for sport or 4ply weight then Brava Sport by WeCrochet 100% acrylic, 273yds/100g is a great option. You could make a really lovely baby blanket with it and it has so many colours to choose from!
Large Version of the C2C square pattern
The version you see below in the Community Garden Blanket is made with Paintbox Simply Aran 100% acrylic, 201yds/184m/100g which I love for really cosy and comfy afghans.
If you’d prefer a cotton then I’d go with Paintbox Cotton Aran 100% cotton, 85m/50g but just be mindful that your blanket will be really heavy (but very beautiful!).
For anyone wanting a really luxurious blanket then you could use Swish Worsted by WeCrochet 100% superwash merino wool 110yds/100m/50g which has the most glorious shades and would be wonderful for this project.
Calculating your yarn
- To calculate the amount of yarn you will need do a sample swatch with the stitch you intend to use (you can use either hdc or dc for c2c) and then measure how much yarn you used per stitch block.
- Multiply that by the number of stitch blocks of that colour and add some extra for the tails to be worked in at the end.
Stitch blocks used:
White: 429
Light Grey: 57
Dark Grey: 23
Light Blue: 26
Bright Yellow: 18
Red: 11
Orange: 8
Light Yellow: 9
Green: 14
Blue: 19
Purple: 22
Tension and Sizing
The larger square measures approx 12″ square when blocked.
The smaller square measures approx 8.5″ square when blocked.
Gauge is not essential for this project. Just try and be as consistent as you can.
Materials
Along with your yarn, you will need the following:
- A 3mm (D) crochet hook for the small sqaure or 5mm(H) crochet hook for the large square- my favourites are Furls Streamline Swirl crochet hooks or Clover Amour crochet hooks.
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
