Crochet Hexagon Flower Motif – Time to Bloom Blanket

The Time to Bloom Blanket is a celebration of flowers and geometry! The whole design came from this crochet hexagon flower motif which is so adaptable that you could use it for bags, scarves, clothing, homeware and so much more than just blankets!

About the Crochet Hexagon

I wanted to create a delicate and detailed yet easy crochet hexagon motif for this blanket so that even a beginner could make it!

I played around with lots of ideas and this delicate flower centre surrounded by simple, plain stitches was the one that stole my heart. It works so well as a full hexagon but also as parts too.

I chose to crochet all of my hexagons in different colour combinations but you can work yours however you’d like of course! I’ll add details below of my colour combinations in case you’d like them.

Where do the hexagon shapes go?

As you can see from the diagram below, the blanket is designed with 5 different hexagon motifs: full hexagons (that we will make from this post), 2 half hexagons and 2 quarter hexagons (Motifs 1-5). These are crocheted together to form the body of the blanket and bordered by 4 panels worked directly onto the blanket and a final border.

Yarn, Materials and Gauge

All of the yarn, materials and pattern notes are included in the main crochet along information page: Crochet Hexagon Blanket Pattern.

We use motif 1 (the full crochet hexagon pattern) as the gauge swatch for the blanket.

Motif 1: the full hexagon motif (scroll down to find part 1) is used as the gauge swatch and measures 7″ (17.75cm) from point to point.

ch(s) – chain(s)

ss – slip stitch

st(s) – stitch(es)

RS – right side

rep – repeat

sp – space

yoh – yarn over hook

BLO – back loop only

Crochet Stitches

Single crochet (sc)

Half Double Crochet (hdc)

Special Stitches

4 double crochet cluster stitch (4dc-cl)

• Yarn over, and insert the hook into the next stitch.
• Yarn over and pull up a loop.
• Yarn over again, and pull the yarn through two loops on the hook, rep from Step 1 three more times in same stitch.
• Yarn over again, and pull the yarn through all loops on the hook.

Standing Stitches

Standing stitches make a great alternative to turning chains. They are created by working the stitch in ‘mid air’ as you begin the row or round. Make sure to check out the video tutorial to see how I do them.

Pattern Notes

The pattern is laid out in separate parts for each Motif and Section.

You can begin each Motif with a magic ring or ch2 and work into the 2nd ch from hook, whichever you prefer.

A ch1 at the beginning of a row does not count as st.

Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each round. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous round.

Construction

The centre of the blanket is worked in motifs that are laid out as per the diagram above.

The motifs are then joined using a flat slip stitch seam (or sewn if you prefer). See my guide for joining crochet hexagons for a step by step tutorial.

The side panels are then added in rows that turn at the end of each row.

The border is then added around the edge of the blanket in rounds without turning your work.

Colour Combinations

As detailed in the main CAL page you’ll need 6 colours for your blanket: A – E.

All round 6 are colour F and all rounds 7-9 are colour A.

Note that for some Motifs, you will use a single colour for rounds 1-5.

Make 12 according to the colours below (or your preferred colour combinations).

• Hexagon 1.1: Round 1: B, Rounds 2-5: C
• Hexagon 1.2: Round 1: B, Round 2: C, Rounds 3-4: E, Round 5: D
• Hexagon 1.3: Round 1: B, Round 2: D, Rounds 3-4: C, Round 5: E
• Hexagon 1.4: Rounds 1-5: C
• Hexagon 1.5: Round 1: B, Rounds 2-5: D
• Hexagon 1.6: Round 1: B, Round 2: E, Rounds 3-4: D, Round 5: C
• Hexagon 1.7: Round 1: B, Round 2: E, Rounds 3-4: B, Round 5: D
• Hexagon 1.8: Rounds 1-5: D
• Hexagon 1.9: Round 1: B, Rounds 2-5: E

Crochet Hexagon Flower Pattern: Motif 1

Make a magic ring to start.

Round 1 (RS): 12dc into magic ring, change colour if needed and ss in 1st st to join. [12 sts]

Round 2: ss into sp between next 2 sts, ch1 (does not count as st throughout), 2hdc in same sp at base of ch, 2hdc in sp between each st around, change colour if needed and ss in 1st st to join. [24 sts]

Round 3: ch1, 2dc in same st at base of ch1, ch1, skip next st, *2dc in next st, ch1, skip next st; rep from * around, ss in 1st st to join. [36 sts – 24 dc and 12 ch1]

Round 4: ss in next dc, ss into first ch1-sp, *ch6, skip 2 sts, ss in next ch1-sp; rep from * around, ss in 1st ch to join. [12 ch6-sps, 12 ss]

Break yarn.

Round 5: join yarn to any ch6-sp, ch1 *(2hdc, dc, ch2, dc, 2hdc) in ch6-sp, 2sc in next ch6-sp; rep from * around, ss in 1st st to join [60 sts – 24 hdc, 12 dc, 12 sc, 12 ch]

Break yarn.

Round 6: join F to any ch2-sp, ch1, *3hdc in ch2-sp, ch1, skip 3 sts, (dc, ch1, dc) in next st, (dc, ch1, dc) in next st, ch1, skip next 3 sts; rep from * around, ss in 1st st to join. [66 sts – 18 hdc, 24 dc, 24 ch1]

Break yarn.

Round 7: join A to 1st hdc of any set of 3hdc, ch1 (does not count as st), *1hdc, (dc, ch1, dc) in next st, hdc in next 3sts (include chs as stitches), 2hdc in ch1-sp, skip next 2 sts, 2hdc in ch1-sp, hdc in next 2 sts; rep from * around, ss in first st to join. [78 sts – 60 hdc, 12 dc, 6 ch1]

Round 8: ss in next dc, ss into ch1-sp, ch1 (does not count as a st), *(2dc, ch1, 2dc) in ch1-sp, skip next st, dc in BLO of next 10 sts, skip next st; rep from * around, ss in 1st st to join. [90 sts – 84dc, 6 ch1]

Round 9: ss in next dc, ss into ch1-sp, ch1 (does not count as a st), *(3dc, ch1, 3dc) in ch1-sp, skip next 2 sts, dc in back bar^ of next 10 sts, skip next 2 sts; rep from * around, ss in 1st dc to join. [102 sts – 96 dc, 6 ch1]

Fasten off and weave in ends.
