Floral Crochet Half Hexagon – Time to Bloom Blanket

The Time to Bloom Blanket is a celebration of flowers and geometry! The design is based around hexagon shapes and this post will focus on the floral crochet half hexagon pattern that we need to make (there are two versions to learn!).

This post includes the written pattern for how to crochet a half hexagon as seen in the blanket below. We need to crochet 8 long edge half hexagons and 3 short edge half hexagons as detailed in the motif list below.

About the Crochet Half Hexagon Motifs

Now that we have created our full crochet hexagon motifs, we need to start making the half hexagons that slot into place to help create the rectangle that forms the centre of the blanket.

As you can see from the diagram below, Motif 2 and 3 are the half hexagon shapes that go along the long edge and short edge of the rectangle.

You might also notice that these are slightly different shapes! This is because of where they sit in the pattern and so we need to work each of them slightly differently. If you’ve managed to make the 12 full hexagons already though you’ll have no trouble!

Where do the hexagon shapes go?

As you can see from the diagram below, the blanket is designed with 5 different hexagon motifs: full hexagons , 2 half hexagons (that we will make from this post) and 2 quarter hexagons (Motifs 1-5). These are crocheted together to form the body of the blanket and bordered by 4 panels worked directly onto the blanket and a final border.

ch(s) – chain(s)

ss – slip stitch

st(s) – stitch(es)

RS – right side

Crochet Stitches

Single crochet (sc)

Half Double Crochet (hdc)

Double Crochet (dc)

Special Stitches

4 double crochet cluster stitch (4dc-cl)

• Yarn over, and insert the hook into the next stitch.
• Yarn over and pull up a loop.
• Yarn over again, and pull the yarn through two loops on the hook, rep from Step 1 three more times in same stitch.
• Yarn over again, and pull the yarn through all loops on the hook.

Standing Stitches

Standing stitches make a great alternative to turning chains. They are created by working the stitch in ‘mid air’ as you begin the row or round. Make sure to check out the video tutorial to see how I do them.

Pattern Notes

The pattern is laid out in separate parts for each Motif and Section.

You can begin each Motif with a magic ring or ch2 and work into the 2nd ch from hook, whichever you prefer.

A ch1 at the beginning of a row does not count as st.

Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each round. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous round.

Turn your work at the end of Rows 1-5.

For Rows 6-9: break yarn and join with RS facing to begin next row.

Construction

The centre of the blanket is worked in motifs that are laid out as per the diagram above.

The motifs are then joined using a flat slip stitch seam (or sewn if you prefer). See my guide for joining crochet hexagons for a step by step tutorial.

The side panels are then added in rows that turn at the end of each row.

The border is then added around the edge of the blanket in rounds without turning your work.

Colour Combinations

As detailed in the main CAL page you’ll need 6 colours for your blanket: A – E.

All Rows 6 are colour F and all Rows 7-9 are colour A.

For all of the crochet half hexagons you will use a single colour for Rows 1-5.

Make 8 long edge half hexagons according to the colours below (or your preferred colour combinations).

• Long Edge Half Hexagon 2.1: Rows 1-5: C
• Long Edge Half Hexagon 2.2: Rows 1-5: E
• Long Edge Half Hexagon 2.3: Rows 1-5: B
• Long Edge Half Hexagon 2.4: Rows 1-5: D

Crochet Half Hexagon Flower Pattern: Motif 2

Make a magic ring to start.

Remember to turn after each row until Row 5 is completed. At the end of Row 5 break yarn and rejoin yarn to first st to begin Row 6.

Round 1 (RS): 6dc into magic ring, turn. [6 sts]

Row 2: ch1, hdc in st at base of ch1, 2hdc in sp between each st across, hdc in last st, turn. [12 sts]

Row 3: ch1, dc in first st, ch1, *2dc in next st, ch1, skip next st; rep from * to last st, dc in last st, turn. [18 sts – 12 dc and 6 ch1]

Row 4: ch3, ss in 1st ch1-sp, *ch6, skip next 2 sts, ss in next ch1-sp; rep from* to last st, ch3, ss in last st, turn. [5 x ch6-sps, 2 x ch3-sps]

Row 5: 2sc in ch3-sp, (2hdc, dc, ch2, dc, 2hdc) in next ch6-sp, *2sc in next ch6-sp, (2hdc, dc, ch2, dc, 2hdc) in next ch6-sp; rep from * to last ch3-sp, 2sc in last ch3-sp, break yarn. [32 sts – 8 sc, 12 hdc, 6 dc, 6 ch]

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.
