Easy Crochet Mittens Pattern – a quick crochet gift

I have always loved making a quick crochet gift or two (or ten!) to give to my friends at Christmas and these easy crochet mittens were perfect for the job last year!

The fingerless mitts are such a doddle to make and take hardly any time at all. They are worked flat in rows and then joined at the side, just leaving a few stitches for the thumbhole and there you have it! The top section has a super easy crochet cable stitch that you’ll master in no time.

About the Winter Silk Easy Crochet Mittens

I hadn’t realised until recently just how much I use craft, particularly crochet, to stay calm and focussed. In the past few months both my husband and I have moved jobs, relocated and our little boy has started a new nursery. This would have all been so straight forward if it had all happened together but unfortunately it didn’t and it meant us being separated for quite some time and living in a strange kind of ridiculously stressful limbo for a time. Thankfully it is all sorted now and we are back together where we belong but it’s helped me realise that I really do use creating to help manage any anxiety I’m feeling.

During this time I really struggled to focus on any large project so I just picked up and remade a few of my older, smaller designs. This is how I came across the Winter Silk Mitts again. I’d forgotten just how easy they are and so I thought I’d share the pattern here for free this week for everyone else to enjoy, especially if like me you’re in need of some crafting therapy.

The mitts will fit an average adult hand but you can just add or subtract a few stitches to the cuff and a couple more rows to make them bigger or smaller to suit you. If you ever need any help with sizing then please just let me know and I’d be more than happy to help you out.

Yarn

I used King Cole Baby Alpaca DK to make my crochet mittens which is 100% baby alpaca 50g/100m and is ridiculously soft and luxurious to work with!

A great alternative would be Deramores Studio DK (100% acrylic, 250m/100g) as it’s got such a lovely soft and silky feel to you and there’s so much yardage in a ball you can make endless pairs of mitts!

Tension and Sizing

18st and 5 rows = 10cm by 10cm The finished mitts measure around 21cm by 8cm but will stretch nicely.

Materials

Along with the yarn you will also need:

A 4mm/G crochet hook

Needle

Scissors

Glossary/Abbreviations

ch – chain

ss – slip stitch

st- stitch

rep – repeat

RS – right side

sk – skip

BL – back loop

FL – front loop

UK TERMS: dc – double crochet, htr – half treble, tr – treble crochet, dtr – double treble

US TERMS: sc – single crochet, hdc – half double crochet, dc – double crochet, tr – treble

Notes

The ch1 at the beginning of a row does not count as a stitch.

Easy Crochet Mittens – The Pattern

STANDARD UK TERMS – please scroll down for US terms.

Make two matching mitts.

Foundation chain: ch38

Row 1: dc in 2nd ch from hook and each across [37]

Row 2: RS; ch1, htr in BL of 15, *sk 2, dtr in next, tr in BL of the 2 skipped stitches, rep from * to last, tr in last

Row 3: ch1, dc in FL of each across [37]

Rows 2 and 3 create the pattern.

Rows 4-17: Repeat the pattern.

Row 18: Rep Row 2

To join the mitts:

Join with a ss seam for 20 stitches at the bottom for the cuff and then ss seam 9 stitches at the top. Leave the rest unworked to form the thumbhole.
