The Pickpocket Hood – Free Crochet Pocket Shawl Pattern

With the change in weather this week I’ve been thinking so much about what projects to bring to the blog and suddenly remembered my Pickpocket Hood as the perfect quick make to enjoy as the evenings are starting to draw in. I must admit that I’ve been going to bed quite early recently as being very pregnant is getting to be hard work (thanks so much to my husband for holding the fort and doing all the bedtimes for Elliot!) so I haven’t had as much time to enjoy crafting in the evenings as I normally do.

With that in mind I’ve set myself a challenge to make a few of these Pickpocket Hoods in various colours as Christmas gifts because they are so easy to make and once I get going I know they’ll fly off the hook!

Yarn

I used Red Heart Holiday Aran for the original hood (who doesn’t love a bit of glitter?!) 96% acrylic, 4% metallic, 100g/215m, 4 balls of gold/aran.

If you’d rather keep yours sparkle-free then a good alternative would be the new Deramores Studio Aran which is so lovely to work with too.

Tension and Sizing

The finished hood measures 23cm by 130cm so is great for just about anyone but you can easily adjust the length of it to suit yourself. 

Tension of main pattern – 12st and 5 rows = 10cm x 10cm but isn’t essential for this project.

Materials

Along with the yarn you will also need:

A 6.5mm crochet hook

Needle

Scissors

Notes

A ch1 at the beginning of a row does not count as a stitch. 

Glossary/Abbreviations

ch – chain, 

ss – slip stitch, 

st- stitch, 

sk – skip, 

BL – back loop, 

FL – front loop, 

rep – repeat, 

RS – right side, 

UK Stitch Terms:

dc – double crochet, 

tr – treble, 

dtr – double treble

US Stitch Terms:

sc – single crochet,

dc – double crochet,

tr – treble crochet

Pattern

In standard UK terms – please scroll down for US terms

SPECIAL STITCH:
2dtr-Cl : *Yarn over twice(yo), insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over, draw the yarn through 2 loops, yarn over, draw the yarn through 2 loops on the hook, repeat from * but in insert hook into same st and not next, at the end, yarn over and draw through all loops.

Make two matching panels as follows:
Foundation chain: ch150
Row 1 (RS): dc in 2nd ch and each across (149)
Row 2-7: ch1 (does not count), dc in BL of each (149)
Row 8: ch4 (counts as st), *skip st, 2dtr-Cl in next, repeat from * to last 2, skip st, dtr in last
Row 9-13: ch4 (counts as st), 2dtr-Cl in centre of each 2dtr-Cl of previous row, dtr in last
Row 14: ch1 (does not count) dc in 1st, 2dc in each st, 2dc in last (149)
Row 15-20: ch1 (does not count) dc in BL of each (149)

To join the panels:
With RS facing inwards, sew seam along top short ends of the hood and down 42 stitches on long edge to make back shape of the hood. Turn RS out.

To make the pockets:
Fold the bottom of the scarf ends over to create a triangle pocket. With RS facing inwards, pin and then sew in place. Turn RS out to finish.

Standard US terms:
