I’ve recently realised that I absolutely love crocheting bags. I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to realise this but now I have I can’t wait to share with you all the free crochet pattern for the Summer Stripes Beach Bag – a perfect crochet bag pattern to make and take with you on your travels (even if they aren’t to the beach!)
The bag uses a half herringbone stitch which gives the most beautiful texture to the crochet beach bag making it seem both classic and modern in design. The stripes are the perfect way to personalise your bag and I can see this in so many different combinations making it perfect for you. This beginner’s crochet bag is made in just one piece so there’s no seaming or shaping to do at all.
You can carry on reading to find the free pattern here in this blogpost or purchase an ad-free, printable PDF version of the Summer Stripes Beach Bag crochet pattern in my stores to download and print.
About the Summer Stripe Crochet Bag Pattern
You may think that the stitch doesn’t sound beginner’s crochet bag pattern but I assure you it is! If you can work a standard half treble (UK) or half double crochet (US) then you’ll be absolutely fine. If it’s new to you then I’ve got a great tutorial from my friend Veronika to share with you in the ‘stitch’ section further down.
After lots of experimenting, I found that the best thing to do to make a great crochet bag pattern is to double your yarn! This bag is made using cotton Aran that is doubled and uses a smaller hook than you would normally for that and so it’s so lovely and strong. Perfect for all those things you need to pop in it!

Yarn
I used Rico Design – Creative Cotton Aran which is a fabulous Aran (10ply)/Worsted (4) yarn in 100% cotton. It has 85m (93yds)/50g (1.7oz) and is easy to wash and care for.
A beautiful alternative is Paintbox Yarns – Cotton Aran which is just as lovely to work with and has exactly the same length of 85m (93yds)/50g (1.7oz).
You will need 2 balls of 6 different colours – I used the following colours: Pearl Grey, Silvery Grey, Salmon, Powder, Nude, White
Tension and Sizing
The crochet beach bag measures 38cm wide by 15cm deep and 34cm tall.
Tension isn’t essential for the crochet bag pattern but 13st and 8 rounds of the main pattern = 10cm by 10cm/4in by 4in.
Materials
Along with the yarn to make your Summer Stripes beginners crochet bag you will also need:
6mm (US J/10) crochet hook – my favourites are Furls Streamline Swirl crochet hooks or Clover Amour crochet hooks. |
Tapestry needle |
Scissors |
Stitch markers if desired |
For the crochet beach bag handles you will need 4 metres of 0.5cm sash cord.
Notes
Use 2 strands of the yarn together throughout.
The ch3 at the beginning of a round counts as a stitch.
From Round 5 work in continuous rounds.
Special Stitch – How to crochet the Half Herringbone Stitch
UK: Herringbone half treble (HBhtr) / US: Herringbone half double crochet (HBhdc)
– Yarn over hook, insert hook through stitch, yarn over, pull back through stitch and straight through the first loop on the hook so that you have two loops left, yarn over and pull through last two loops.

Shape the top of the bag
Counting from your first stitch of each round, place stitch markers through the following sets of stitches to hold them together: 4th and 18th, 19th and 33rd, 62nd and 76th, 77th and 91st. These stitches will be joined to form the shape of the bag.
There will be 15 stitches in each of the 4 corner spaces you have made with your stitch markers. With the RS facing, leave the first st unworked and join the other stitches with a ss seam (7st), continue along the top of the bag with a ss in 28, then join the next corner with a ss seam (7st), leave the last stitch unworked [42]
Repeat this process on the other side of the bag. Sew in all ends.
Create and join your bag handles
Cut the 4m of cord into 4 x 1m long sections.
Use 2 sections of cord for each handle. Slot the 2 sections through from the front to back on the third row down and 6th stitch in from the top of the bag.
Tie the sections together with a knot, leaving about 10cm at the end.
Twist the rest of the two sections around and around until about 10cm from the other end.
Slot the other end of the handle through the corresponding place on the other side of the bag and secure with another knot.
