The Super Alexa Blanket is a fun and quick crochet project that you will love to make. The chunky crochet blanket is made from 20 matching motifs featuring cluster stitches to give loads of lovely texture and make it a really tactile blanket to snuggle in.
Designed in chunky yarn, this pattern is also brilliant as a baby blanket (in fact, that’s what it started life as) and all you need to do is switch the yarn for a lighter weight! A double knit or worsted weight yarn would make an adorable crochet baby blanket too. Just imagine all the beautiful colour options you could choose for it?!
The pattern is an intermediate level, however, I’ve made a video tutorial for the motif sections so is the perfect project if you’re a beginner that wants to start stretching your skills.
You can carry on reading to find the free pattern here in this blogpost or purchase an ad-free, printable PDF version of the Super Alexa Blanket crochet pattern in my stores to download and print.

About the Chunky Crochet Blanket
I designed the original Alexa Blanket many years ago for our lovely friends when they had their first baby and she is now all grown up and at school!
They moved house last year and asked me if I’d consider making them a blanket or sofa throw for their new home and I instantly knew what to make them – a super-sized Alexa Blanket!
I had always wanted to revisit the pattern, update it and generally make it better all round and so this was the perfect opportunity.
I went for some lovely chunky yarn as they wanted something really nice and ‘squishy’ for the back of the sofa and some of their favourite bright colours too.
I’ve always thought that personalising a project is always one of the best parts of crochet and I’m happy to say they are delighted with their super squishy, chunky crochet blanket.
Also, the original Alexa Blanket is still going strong and although it’s baby-sized it is still used every day in their house!

Yarn
To make the Alexa Chunky Crochet Blanket I used Paintbox Yarn Simply Chunky which is 100% acrylic, 136m/100g and great value for money.
I used:
6 balls of Misty Grey
2 balls each of Slate Grey, Soft Fudge, Vintage Pink, Bubblegum Pink, Ballet Pink, Washed Teal and Dolphin Blue.
A great alternative yarn is Brava Bulky Yarn by WeCrochet which is also 100% acrylic and fabulous to work with too.
Both of these yarns come in a beautiful range of colours so you can tailor your blanket to suit whoever or wherever you are making it for.
Tension and Sizing
The finished blanket measures 142cm by 116cm.
Each motif measures 26cm by 26cm but tension isn’t critical for this project.
Materials
Along with your yarn, you will need the following:
- 10mm Crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Stitch markers if desired
Glossary and Abbreviations
ch(s) – chain(s)
ss – slip stitch
RS – right side
WS – wrong side
tog – together
sk – skip
rep – repeat
FP – front post
BP – back post
Crochet Stitches
The chunky crochet blanket uses the following crochet stitches:
Standard UK Crochet Term | Standard US Crochet Term |
dc – double crochet | sc – single crochet |
htr – half treble | hdc – half double crochet |
tr – treble crochet | dc – double crochet |
Special Crochet Stitches
Special stitch cluster/cl: in UK terms.
For a 3tr cluster stitch (3tr-Cl) begin as if to treble crochet in next stitch, but don’t complete the stitch and leave two loops on the hook. Repeat this again, crocheting as if to make a treble crochet but don’t complete the stitch and leave three loops on the hook. Continue to do this, working into the same stitch, until there are 4 loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through all 4 loops on the hook.
To work a 4tr-Cl just add another stitch before completing the stitch with 5 loops on the hook.
Pattern Notes
A ch1 or ch2 at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch.
You can seam your motifs however you would like but I have 3 favourite ways of joining crochet squares together that you might enjoy learning.
