The Wanderers Blanket is a stunning mosaic crochet blanket that celebrates colour, texture and geometry. The detailed design is far simpler than it appears with a clean crisp border and huge tassels to emphasise the beautiful drape.
This free mosaic crochet pattern is featured as part of the 2021 Furls Crochet Blog Hop and I’m so delighted to be taking part! There is a new pattern every week for you to enjoy.
You can carry on reading to find the free pattern here in this blogpost or purchase an ad-free, printable PDF version of the Wanderers Blanket pattern with added mosaic crochet chart, technique information and resizing guide in my pattern store to download and print.

About the Wanderers Mosaic Crochet Blanket
I first came across the mosaic crochet technique a few years ago when I designed a cushion for Little Box of Crochet and ever since then I have had this idea in my head for a mosaic crochet blanket.
I wanted to use a similar vibe of a complex looking repeated geometric design that also had the element of colour changes making it look like an optical illusion. I’m so pleased with how it turned out and want to make one in another combination already!
If you’ve never tried the mosaic crochet technique before then I’m sure you will love it. It’s not as tricky as it might look and I’ve put together some step by step pictures of it to help you out too.
I know that some crochet patterns can seem intimidating so I’ve made a video tutorial to go with the pattern and if you choose to purchase the PDF then you’ll also get a resizing guide and technique information too.

Yarn
To make the Wanderers mosaic blanket I used Wander yarn by Furls Crochet.
It’s a fabulous worsted weight yarn that’s 100% premium acrylic at 120yds/100g.
In total, I used 11 balls, approximately 1100yds.
I used 4 balls of Mist and 1 ball each of:
Cobblestone
Thatch
Ambrosia
Canary
Meadow
Dragonfruit
Velvet

Mosaic Crochet Technique
The technique for mosaic crochet may look quite complicated and fiddly but I promise it isn’t once you get the hang of it!
There are lots of different ways to achieve a mosaic crochet design. I will describe the way that I made this one but feel free to use the technique that you like best to make your blanket.
The easiest way to create the pattern is by reading the chart rather than the word pattern but I will provide a worded version of the main motif rows for you to refer to and get your confidence and help you to read the chart.
See my step by step tutorial for the two-row mosaic crochet technique to get you started if you’re new to it.

Video Tutorial

How to read the mosaic crochet chart
The chart is read from the bottom to the top with each row representing 2 rows of the same colour of crochet. The first pass Row 1,2,3 etc (right side) is read from right to left, the second pass Row 1a, 2a, 3a etc (wrong side) is read from left to right.
Each square on the chart represents a st or skipped stitch. The colour you are working with are the stitches for that row, any other colour are the skipped stitches and you need to work a ch1 and skip the stitch.
For a RS row any st into a dc (US sc) of previous row is a dc (US sc), any st into a skipped st 3 rows below is a tr (US dc). Throughout the pattern they will be referred to as a st, you will see when you are working what they need to be.
Key – * please note that it is NOT Pomegranate used but is Velvet instead *
