Are you looking for the perfect crochet hat pattern that’s quick, easy and stylish? This easy crochet hat pattern is just that and more! It’s ideal for beginners, featuring a cozy design that works up quickly in soft, tweedy yarn.
With sizes for babies all the way up to women and men, this hat is one for the whole family! Whether you’re making a beanie for yourself or as a thoughtful gift, this pattern will guide you step-by-step to create a classic, comfortable hat that everyone will love!
In this post you’ll find everything you need to make this easy beginner crochet hat, including materials, stitches, a detailed video tutorial and free written pattern for blog subscribers.
I never used to like crochet hats, but I think this one has such an understated modern vibe that it doesn’t really fit with what I’d traditionally associate with crochet hats.
Instead, you’d think it was a knitted hat, or possibly even store bought!
I don’t know if it’s the simple stitch pattern or the tweed yarn that creates this feel, or maybe it’s the combination of both.
Either way, I’m sure you’re going to love making and wearing this simple crochet beanie as much as I do!
And don’t stop there, check out my other crochet hats and beanies for more inspiration.
Yarn
To make this half double crochet beanie pattern, I used Brava Tweed by WeCrochet, 97% Premium Acrylic, 3% Viscose (218yds/200m/100g)
This premium acrylic is enhanced with flecks of viscose Tweed to add depth to sweaters, blankets, and more while maintaining the durability and affordability you can expect from the Brava family.
The range of coordinating colors all feature cream, coffee, and charcoal tweed flecks, and for even more color options, Brava Tweed can mix and match with Brava Worsted or Brava Speckle to create beautiful projects!
Hypoallergenic, hard-wearing, and machine washable, as always, Brava Tweed is sure to please.
This is a category 4, medium weight yarn, which gives a cozy and warm feel to my hats. Check our handy yarn weight chart and guide to find out more about yarn weights and categories.
Yarn Substitutes
You can use any yarn that you like bearing in mind that you need to make sure you meet the gauge. Some other great options are:
- Color Theory by Lion Brand, 100% Acrylic, 246yds/225m/100g
- Sirdar Country Classic Worsted, 50% Wool, 50% Acrylic, 218yds/200m/100g
- Brava Worsted by WeCrochet, 100% Premium Acrylic, 218yds/200m/100g

Constructing your Beginner Crochet Hat
The hat is made from the side across in turned rows.
Each row uses single crochet stitches for the Rib, half double crochet stitches for the Body and slip stitches for the Crown.
We continue to work turned rows until the project measures the circumference needed for the finished hat.
The first and last rows are then seamed together.
The Crown is pulled tight to create the shape of the hat and complete.
Customisation
If you would like to adjust the circumference of your hat then add or subtract as many rows as you like.
If you would like to adjust the height of your hat you can work as many or as few chains on your Foundation Chain.
Before you jump into crocheting your crochet hats for adults and children, take a moment to read through the pattern notes—it’s a game-changer!
These handy insights will not only simplify your pattern-reading journey but also ensure a smoother crochet experience. You’ll find helpful tips on deciphering the sizing, customisation and more.
Trust me, a quick peek at these notes will set you up for crochet success!
- The pattern is worked in turned rows.
- A ch1 at the beginning of a row does not count as a stitch.
- Read through the entire pattern before beginning.
- Before you start, go through the pattern and highlight/mark the stitch and row counts that correspond to the size you are making (this will make your life much easier!).
- Make sure that you are familiar with all of the stitches in the abbreviations list before you begin.
- Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each row. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous row.
- The count number referring to each size is laid out as follows: 0-3 months (Baby, Toddler, Child, Adult, Large Adult)
