Free Flower Crochet Blanket Pattern – The Flora Quilt

About the Free Crochet Flower Blanket Pattern

I designed this fabulously textured crochet blanket a number of years ago when I was playing around with different shapes and sizes of crochet motifs. I love creating easy little motifs and before I knew it I had a number of flower type shapes that sat really nicely together a bit like a crochet quilt.

I decided to really go for the flower theme and join everything together with the little crochet leaves and I was so pleased I did – they really add something special I think!

The blanket would make a great statement piece in your home. Drape it over your couch or bed to create a beautiful cosy feel to any space plus a wonderful splash of colour!

Other Floral Crochet and Motif Crochet Patterns

I didn’t realise until now quite how many not only floral crochet patterns I have but also crochet motif blanket patterns! Over the years I’ve designed so many and so here are some of my favourites you might like:

In terms of blankets we have the Super Alexa Blanket which is chunky, fast and so fun! The Mitred Square Blanket which is great for yarn stash busting. Or perhaps you’re after something smaller and the Seaside Baby Blanket would be perfect in that case!

For smaller projects how about the floral granny cushion or the crochet lace square cushion perhaps? They are both super quick and great to match to your decor too!

The Blanket Tension and Sizing Options

The finished blanket measures 85cm by 105cm.

Each full flower motif measures 11cm across but tension isn’t essential for this project.

Yarn for the Flora Quilt

To make the flower crochet blanket I used Sublime Worsted which unfortunately isn’t widely available anymore so I’ve tried my best to come up with some good matches that you can get hold of easily now.

Option 1 –

A great choice would be Swish Worsted by WeCrochet a 100% Fine Superwash Merino Wool (110yds/50g).

Yarn required (balls):

A: 10 balls,

B, C, D, E, F: 2 balls each

Here is my favourite colour combination:

A: Nutmeg Heather

B: Honey

C: Haze Heather

D: Frosting

E: Throne

F: Dublin

Option 2 –

Another option would be Paintbox Yarns Wool Worsted which is another 100% wool (218yds/100g) with beautiful colours.

A: 5 balls,

B, C, D, E, F: 1 balls each

Here is my favourite colour combination:

A: Vanilla Cream

B: Mustard Yellow

C: Dusty Lilac

D: Candyfloss Pink

E: Raspberry Pink

F: Grass Green

Finding the right yarn for your projects can be tricky sometimes and depends on so many things like fibre content, yarn weight, budget, colour choices and more. I’ve put together a guide for the best yarn for crochet blankets to help you discover the things I’ve learnt over the years as both a designer and maker that help me choose the perfect one.

What Alternative Yarn Could You Use?

If you’re looking for an acrylic option then I’d go with Brava Worsted by WeCrochet as it has so many colours to choose from and is at a great price point.

I know that some people like me also love using cotton for blankets and throws like this so here are a couple of cottons that would work well –

• Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran – 100% cotton, 85m/50g which washes so well.
• Dishie yarn by WeCrochet – 100% cotton, 190yds/100g, there are so many beautiful colours to choose from

Along with your yarn, you will need the following:

4.5mm (US G+) crochet hook – my favourites are Furls Streamline Swirl crochet hooks or Caspian Regular crochet hook

RS – right side

WS – wrong side

Crochet Stitches used in the Pattern

The pattern uses the following crochet stitches.

Standard UK Crochet Term	Standard US Crochet Term

ttr- triple treble	dtr- double treble

Special Stitch:

Reverse sc/dc – Bring the yarn to the front of your work, insert the crochet hook into the first stitch from the back to the front (working in reverse), yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook.

Notes

The ch1 at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch.

A ch2 or 3 at the beginning of a round counts as a stitch.

Make sure to read the pattern thoroughly before beginning.

Construction

The Flora Quilt is constructed by firstly making the following –

• 12 Full Flower Motifs
• 14 Part Flower Motifs
• 20 Plain Motifs
• 62 Leaf Motifs

Once all of the motifs are made as instructed (some will need the last round for joining) lay them out in the following format. Then join each corner ch3-sp with a ss to secure while working the last round/row. Sew the leaves in place between the motifs.
