I am so excited to share the Mystical Hat pattern with you today – a free girls and boys crochet hat pattern with textured stitches, the perfect pattern to start our winter crocheting. I love this time of year when we can start crocheting all the warm and cosy things for the colder months!

Simple, stylish and above all comfy. The Mystical Hat actually comes in sizes for all the family from newborn baby to large adult. Worked in simple crochet stitches and packed full of texture, they are a breeze to make and a delight to wear.

In this post you’ll find everything you need to know how to make this crochet hat, including materials, stitches, a detailed video tutorial and free written pattern for blog subscribers.

A woman and a child wearing crochet hats stand in a field, holding a wicker basket. The woman smiles while the child, whose hat is made from a boys crochet hat pattern, looks down. The field has tall grasses and trees in the background.

The Mystical Hat is a wonderful addition to my crochet hats and beanies collection packed full of crochet stitch texture, luxury and style. It is such a pleasure to make, with simple bottom up construction and easy shaping. You really will want to make one for all the family!

The pattern includes instructions for sizes Newborn, Baby, Toddler, 2-6 Years, 6-12 Years, Teen/Small Adult, Medium Adult and Large Adult and is easily adjustable in height and circumference to fit most people.

I can see these crochet hats as fabulous gifts for family and friends this Christmas or as a great addition to your online crochet store – I’m more than happy for you to make and sell as many of these as you can personally make!

Yarn

To make the crochet hat I used Amigo DK from Hobbii which is 100% Acrylic (191yds/175m/50g).

Amigo is a really soft yarn with wonderful, airy volume. It is produced from 100% HB acrylic of very high quality and comes in an enormous selection of colors.

HB stands for high bulk. It is a production technique that uses steam and pressure to make the fibers contract a little and curl so that they become fuller. The result is a light and soft yarn that is both comfortable to work with and to wear on the body.

It’s a category 3, light weight yarn which gives a soft and delicate feel to the mitts. Check our handy yarn weight chart and guide to find out more about yarn weights and categories.

I used Walnut, Dark Blue Melange and Patina Green for my hats but there are 60 to choose from!

You can use any yarn that you like bearing in mind that you need to make sure you meet the gauge. Some other great options are:

  • Versatile Design: Customize the circumference and length of your hat to suit.
  • Great For Gifts: a wonderful gift to crochet and give at any time of the year.
  • Lightweight and wearable: with a stunning softness they are not only beautiful but so comfy to wear too!
A child wearing a boys crochet hat pattern and a pink shirt holds an empty wicker basket while standing in a grassy field.

The real beauty of this pattern is that it uses just basic crochet stitches (just half double crochet and single crochet), has a super easy construction and is quick to make too. The top of the hat features an easy decrease using half double crochet 2 together to create the crown.

The hat features as part of my Mystical Collection that is all being released beginning September 2024 – it would be amazing if you could join me!

Crochet Terms You’ll Need to Know

Glossary and Abbreviations

beg – beginning

blo – back loop only

ch(s) – chain(s)

ch-sp(s) – chain space(s)

flo – front loop only

rep – repeat

RS – right side

sp – space

ss/sl st – slip stitch

st(s) – stitch(es)

WS – wrong side

Yoh – yarn over hook

Stitches

The pattern is written in standard US terms and uses the following crochet stitches:

sc – single crochet (UK dc – double crochet)

hdc – half double crochet (UK htr – half treble crochet)

Special Stitches

I love experimenting with texture in crochet and so was so pleased to come up with this stitch pattern!

It uses beginner stitches (half double crochet) in various loops of the stitch. You alternate the front loop only, back loop only and 3rd loop to create a wonderful texture that looks far more complicated than it really is!

I love it so much that I’ve also used it on my sweater scarf with sleeves, my free crochet fingerless gloves pattern and my simple crochet top pattern, plus I have more designs in the works coming soon!

3rd loop

Extra loop created on hdc from the yarn over. When working in rows it’s the first loop you come to when looking at the stitch. When working in rounds it will be the furthest away from you at the back of your crochet.

flo – front loop only

To work the front loop only, turn your work so that the top is facing you to see the front and back loops. Work into the front loop by inserting the hook into the loop of the ‘V’ nearest you.

blo – back loop only

To work the back loop only, turn your work so that the top is facing you to see the front and back loops. Work into the back loop by inserting the hook into the loop furthest from you.

Half double crochet 2 together

A half double crochet 2 together (hdc2tog) in crochet is a great way to decrease the number of stitches we have in a row or round.

It involves making 2 stitches into just 1 so that on your next row or round you have 1 less for every hdc2tog that you work.

If you know how to half double crochet then crocheting 2 of them together is easy!

We just begin 1 hdc in our first stitch but before we complete it we begin another hdc in the next stitch so that we can combine them together.

Step 1: Yarn over hook and locate the first stitch to work into.

Step 2: Insert hook into stitch. Yarn over hook and pull through [You now have 3 loops on the hook.].

Step 3: Yarn over hook and insert hook into next stitch. Yarn over hook and pull through [You now have 5 loops on the hook].

Step 4: Yarn over hook and pull through all the loops on the hook to complete the stitch.

Foundation single crochet (Fsc)

Step 1: Ch 2, insert hook into second ch from hook, yarn over and pull up a loop. [2 loops on hook]

Step 2: Yarn over and pull up another loop i.e. ch1. This creates the first “chain” in your foundation row. [still 2 loops on hook]

Step 3: Yarn over and pull through both loops to complete the first Fsc.

Step 4: Next stitch and subsequent stitches: Insert hook into “chain” created in Step 2, yarn over and pull up a loop. [2 loops on hook]

Step 5: Yarn over and pull up another loop i.e. ch1. This creates the next “chain” in your foundation row. [still 2 loops on hook]

Step 6: Yarn over and pull through both loops to complete the next Fsc.

Repeat Steps 4, 5 and 6 as required.

Making Your Crochet Hat with Textured Stitches Perfect For You

If you would like to adjust the circumference of your hat then add or subtract multiples of 3 from your first row.

If you would like to adjust the length of your hat you can work as many or as few rows of the Main Body as you like before closing the top.

Before you jump into crocheting your hat, take a moment to read through the pattern notes—it’s a game-changer!

These handy insights will not only simplify your pattern-reading journey but also ensure a smoother crochet experience. You’ll find helpful tips on deciphering the sizing, customisation and more.

Trust me, a quick peek at these notes will set you up for crochet success!

  • A ch1 at the beg does not count as a st.
  • The pattern is worked in continuous rounds.
  • Make sure to use stitch markers at the beginning of each round so as not to lose your place.
  • Read through the entire pattern before beginning.
  • Before you start, go through the pattern and highlight/mark the stitch and row counts that correspond to the size you are making (this will make your life much easier!).
  • Make sure that you are familiar with all of the stitches in the abbreviations list before you begin.
  • Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each row. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous row.
  • The count number referring to each size is laid out as follows: Newborn (Baby, Toddler, 2-6 years, 6-12 years, Teen/Small Adult, Medium Adult, Large Adult)

FINISHING TOUCHES

All Sizes

Adding a pom pom

You can complete the look of your hat by securing a ready made pom pom as I have or creating your own using some yarn and a pom pom maker.

Make sure to secure the pom pom well to the top centre of the hat.

Adding a label or tag

Another great addition to your hat is a small tag to add a really professional finish.

I used plain tags and a leather stamp embossing set to add the first letter of the wearer’s name for a great gift!

You can either sew on the tags or use a rivet set like I did.

Making to sell? How about taking custom orders to stamp and personalise your hats? You are welcome to sell anything you personally make using my patterns 🙂

Take your embossing set to your craft fair and market stall so that you can do it there and then for them!
