Enjoy this chunky crochet blanket pattern in 4 sizes that just uses beginner stitches and is super quick and easy! You can make this sumptuous crochet throw in just a few hours using thick, chunky yarn, and a big hook – it will make a glorious addition to any modern home.
Simple, stylish and above all cozy. The Mystical Blanket is perfect to add texture, tone and comfort to your home plus it’s so relaxing to make! Worked in simple crochet stitches and packed full of texture, it’s a joy to crochet (and did I mention quick?!).
In this post you’ll find everything you need to know how to make this modern crochet blanket pattern, including materials, stitches, a detailed video tutorial and free written pattern for blog subscribers.
I have a huge range of crochet blanket patterns from over the years but the Mystical Blanket is something I’ve never done before – a truly easy chunky crochet blanket pattern that takes no time at all!
The pattern includes instructions for sizes Lovey (30” x 36”), Crib (40” x 60”), Lapghan (45” x 50”), Throw (60” x 72”) and is easily adjustable in height and width to make any size of blanket you like.
I can see these chunky blankets as wonderful seasonal or house warming gifts that can be made to match the recipients home decor perfectly. Go neutrals to emphasise the texture of the beautiful stitches or go for it and add a huge pop of colour!
Yarn
To make the textured crochet blanket pattern I used Amigo Giga from Hobbii which is 100% Acrylic (103yds/95m/150g).
It’s both easy and fast to work with Amigo Giga. The yarn has a lot of volume and is wound in large, chunky skeins of 150 g (5.3 oz).
The chunky yarn is amazing to work with for beginners since the individual stitches are so large that it’s easy to notice and correct mistakes.
It’s a category 6, super chunky yarn which gives a soft and cozy feel to the blanket. Check our handy yarn weight chart and guide to find out more about yarn weights and categories.
I used Sand for my blanket but there are 60 to choose from so go for it!
Yarn Substitutes
You can use any yarn that you like bearing in mind that you need to make sure you meet the gauge. Some other great options are:
- Patons Highland Bulky; 75% Acrylic, 25% Wool (83yds/75m/100g)
- Bernat Blanket; 100% Polyester (220yds/201m/300g)
Things you’ll love about this chunky crochet blanket pattern
The real beauty of this pattern is that it uses just basic crochet stitches (just half double crochet and single crochet), has a super easy construction and is quick to make too. You really could crochet this blanket in an evening!
The blanket features as part of my Mystical Collection that is all being released beginning September 2024 – it would be amazing if you could join me!

Special Stitches
I love experimenting with texture in crochet and so was so pleased to come up with this stitch pattern!
It uses beginner stitches (half double crochet) in various loops of the stitch. You alternate the front loop only, back loop only and 3rd loop to create a wonderful texture that looks far more complicated than it really is!
I love it so much that I’ve also used it on my sweater scarf with sleeves, my free crochet fingerless gloves pattern and my simple crochet top pattern, plus I have more designs in the works coming soon!
It also works brilliantly in rounds too! My Mystical Hat pattern is such fun and makes great gifts too 🙂
3rd loop
Extra loop created on hdc from the yarn over. When working in rows it’s the first loop you come to when looking at the stitch. When working in rounds it will be the furthest away from you at the back of your crochet.
flo – front loop only
To work the front loop only, turn your work so that the top is facing you to see the front and back loops. Work into the front loop by inserting the hook into the loop of the ‘V’ nearest you.
blo – back loop only
To work the back loop only, turn your work so that the top is facing you to see the front and back loops. Work into the back loop by inserting the hook into the loop furthest from you.
Half double crochet 2 together
A half double crochet 2 together (hdc2tog) in crochet is a great way to decrease the number of stitches we have in a row or round.
It involves making 2 stitches into just 1 so that on your next row or round you have 1 less for every hdc2tog that you work.
If you know how to half double crochet then crocheting 2 of them together is easy!
We just begin 1 hdc in our first stitch but before we complete it we begin another hdc in the next stitch so that we can combine them together.
Step 1: Yarn over hook and locate the first stitch to work into.
Step 2: Insert hook into stitch. Yarn over hook and pull through [You now have 3 loops on the hook.].
Step 3: Yarn over hook and insert hook into next stitch. Yarn over hook and pull through [You now have 5 loops on the hook].
Step 4: Yarn over hook and pull through all the loops on the hook to complete the stitch.
Foundation single crochet (Fsc)
Step 1: Ch 2, insert hook into second ch from hook, yarn over and pull up a loop. [2 loops on hook]
Step 2: Yarn over and pull up another loop i.e. ch1. This creates the first “chain” in your foundation row. [still 2 loops on hook]
Step 3: Yarn over and pull through both loops to complete the first Fsc.
Step 4: Next stitch and subsequent stitches: Insert hook into “chain” created in Step 2, yarn over and pull up a loop. [2 loops on hook]
Step 5: Yarn over and pull up another loop i.e. ch1. This creates the next “chain” in your foundation row. [still 2 loops on hook]
Step 6: Yarn over and pull through both loops to complete the next Fsc.
Repeat Steps 4, 5 and 6 as required.
Making Your Textured Crochet Blanket Perfect For You
If you would like to adjust the width of your blanket then add or subtract multiples of 3 from your first row.
If you would like to adjust the length of your blanket you can work as many or as few rows of the Set Main Body Pattern as you like.
If you would like to adjust the size of the border then work as many repeats of the Set Border Pattern as you like. Bare in mind that this will add both width and length to the blanket as you work your way around.
Before you jump into crocheting your blanket, take a moment to read through the pattern notes—it’s a game-changer!
These handy insights will not only simplify your pattern-reading journey but also ensure a smoother crochet experience. You’ll find helpful tips on deciphering the sizing, customisation and more.
Trust me, a quick peek at these notes will set you up for crochet success!
- A ch1 at the beg does not count as a st.
- The pattern is worked in turned rows to begin with and then changes to continuous rounds for the border.
- Read through the entire pattern before beginning.
- Before you start, go through the pattern and highlight/mark the stitch and row counts that correspond to the size you are making (this will make your life much easier!).
- Make sure that you are familiar with all of the stitches in the abbreviations list before you begin.
- Instructions are given for the smallest size, with larger sizes in brackets ( ). E.g. Lovey (Crib, Lapghan, Throw)
- If an instruction does not apply to a particular size then an x is used instead of a number. E.g. x (x, 2, 3) means that the Lovey and Crib do not apply to this instruction.
- Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each row. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous Row.
