Ankle, standard or knee length – this showstopper crochet sock pattern is sure to keep you cosy whichever length you choose! Using the overlay mosaic crochet technique you can create complicated looking socks with the simplest of stitches.
I will admit, these are more on the intermediate side in terms of construction, and require a bit of prior mosaic crochet knowledge, but they’re worth the extra effort and anyone can make them if you put your mind (and hook!) to it. You’ll have a beautiful, unique pair of crochet wool socks by the time you’re finished.
You can wear these all the way up to your knees, style them with a pair of boots so they look like cuffs, or bunch them around your calves for a leg-warmer-look. These are just some style options. Once you have them, you can toss them on with just about any outfit for pizzazz!

More about this mosaic crochet sock pattern
These toe up crochet socks are explained in great detail below so don’t worry about getting lost. By working with contrasting yarn, the pattern will pop but if you’re wanting a more subtle look, you can choose your colors accordingly.
These are crochet socks for adults and there is an additional different size mentioned so that you can choose whichever would fit best. If you want a comfier feel, you can make them with a thicker yarn. Once you read through the pattern, you’ll be able to better judge how to make it perfectly.
You can also stop at whichever round you want if you want the length to be a little shorter. But this is a great pattern to try out something new and learn how to crochet long socks!
How do you crochet knee high socks like these?
These crochet socks are worked starting from the toe and there are different mosaic sections which are prominent with the color changes. The socks are made in continuous rounds so you won’t be joining at the end of every round which helps avoid a nasty looking seam.
I know it looks like there’s a lot happening in these socks but you’ll only be using basic stitches to accomplish their construction and you only ever use one color per round!
Yarn
To crochet these mosaic crochet socks, I used beautiful West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4ply yarn (75% wool, 25% nylon, 100g/400m) in the colors Hydrangea (335), Bluebell Mist (1022), Honeysuckle (234).
These are my colors A, B, and C respectively and I needed 1 ball of each.
Alternatively, here are some other yarns that would also work really well to crochet these socks:
- Hawthorne Fingering Yarn (80% Fine Superwash Highland Wool, 20% Polyamide (Nylon); 357yds/100g)
- Stroll Fingering (75% Fine Superwash Merino Wool, 25% Nylon; 211m/50g)
Tension and Sizing
To crochet these socks, 24 sts and 28 rounds measure 10 x 10cm (4x4in) in the mosaic pattern using a 3mm hook, or the size needed to obtain correct tension.
The socks measure 20 (21.5) cm/ 7.75 (8.5″) in circumference around the foot and fit UK shoe size 3-5 (6-8). They are in ankle (2.75″), standard (5.75″) and knee length (12.5″).
Materials
Along with your yarn, you will need the following:

Special Stitches
We’re using the mosaic overlay technique in this pair of socks which gives it that unique texture.
If you want to make more crochet projects using the mosaic technique, I’ve got a few suggestions for you (and you can search my blog for more patterns too):
- Rainbow Splash Blanket (made with a simple 4-row repeat)
- Hayden Bag (this is worked in the round too)
- Wanderers Blanket (lots of geometry and texture in this one)
The special stitch used in these long socks is given below:
Mosaic Double Crochet: Mdc
Yoh, insert hook into the unused flo 2 rounds below, yoh and pull up a loop, (yoh and pull through 2 loops on hook) twice, skip next st on current round.
Pattern Notes
The crochet sock pattern are worked from the Toe up. The Toe is worked in a continuous spiral without closing off each round with a slip st.
You may find it useful to mark the first st of the round, moving it up as you go.
The Foot and Leg section are worked using the overlay mosaic technique. All rounds are worked in one colour.
Where a second colour appears in a round, this is worked in the next round by making a US double crochet into the unused flo 2 rounds below (Mdc – mosaic double crochet).
A space is worked for Heel to be worked into at the end.
The socks are written with the smallest size first and the largest size in brackets.
Overlay Mosaic Technique
Various sections of the socks are worked using the overlay mosaic crochet technique. This uses one colour per round and all sts are worked as a single crochet in the back loop only unless a Mosaic Double Crochet stitch is indicated in the written pattern or the chart.
- In the written pattern it is referred to as a Mdc.
- In the chart it appears as an ‘X’.
