Free Fingerless Gloves Crochet Pattern: Mystical Mitts

I don’t know about you, but I love this time of year when we have an excuse to start crocheting all the warm and cosy things for winter! I can’t tell you how excited I am to share the Mystical Mitts with you today – a free fingerless gloves crochet pattern to get you in the mood for the cooler months ahead.

In sizes for toddler through to large adult these crochet fingerless gloves with thumb are quick, easy and fun to make for everyone! You can also style them to suit with instruction on how to customise the length, cuffs and thumb too.

The Mystical Mitts are a simple pair of crochet mittens packed full of crochet stitch texture, luxury and style. They are a dream to make, simply seam a rectangle and add a thumbhole – a quick and easy pattern perfect for gifts and for yourself!

The pattern includes instructions for sizes Toddler, Child, Teen/Small Adult, Medium Adult and Large Adult and are easily adjustable to fit most people.

After years of designing fingerless crochet gloves and mittens, I’m delighted to say I’ve finally got around to making a full fingered pair! My herringbone moss stitch crochet mittens are such fun to make (but you can make a fingerless version too of course!).

Amigo is a really soft yarn with wonderful, airy volume. It is produced from 100% HB acrylic of very high quality and comes in an enormous selection of colors.

HB stands for high bulk. It is a production technique that uses steam and pressure to make the fibers contract a little and curl so that they become fuller. The result is a light and soft yarn that is both comfortable to work with and to wear on the body.

It’s a category 3, light weight yarn which gives a soft and delicate feel to the mitts. Check our handy yarn weight chart and guide to find out more about yarn weights and categories.

I used Sand, Walnut and Verdigris for my mitts but there are 60 to choose from!

The real beauty of this pattern is that it uses just basic crochet stitches (just half double crochet and single crochet), has a super easy construction and is quick to make too.

How much yarn do I need to crochet a pair of gloves?

Toddler (Child, Teen/Small Adult, Medium Adult and Large Adult)

You will need approximately 1 (1, 1, 1, 2) balls of yarn for the fingerless mitts. Approximately 77 (96, 134, 172, 210)yds.

Crochet Terms You’ll Need to Know

Glossary and Abbreviations

beg – beginning

blo – back loop only

ch(s) – chain(s)

ch-sp(s) – chain space(s)

flo – front loop only

rep – repeat

RS – right side

sp – space

ss/sl st – slip stitch

st(s) – stitch(es)

WS – wrong side

Yoh – yarn over hook

Stitches

The pattern is written in standard US terms and uses the following crochet stitches:

sc – single crochet (UK dc – double crochet)

hdc – half double crochet (UK htr – half treble crochet)

Special Stitches

I love experimenting with texture in crochet and so was so pleased to come up with this stitch pattern!

It uses beginner stitches (half double crochet) in various loops of the stitch. You alternate the front loop only, back loop only and 3rd loop to create a wonderful texture that looks far more complicated than it really is!

I love it so much that I’ve also used it on my sweater scarf with sleeves and my simple crochet top pattern, plus I have more designs in the works coming soon!

3rd loop

Extra loop created on hdc or from the yarn over. When working in rows it’s the first loop you come to when looking at the stitch. When working in rounds it will be the furthest away from you at the back of your crochet.

flo – front loop only

To work the front loop only, turn your work so that the top is facing you to see the front and back loops. Work into the front loop by inserting the hook into the loop of the ‘V’ nearest you.

blo – back loop only

To work the back loop only, turn your work so that the top is facing you to see the front and back loops. Work into the back loop by inserting the hook into the loop furthest from you.

Foundation half double crochet (Fhdc)

Step 1: Ch 2, yarn over, insert hook into second ch from hook, yarn over and pull up a loop. [3 loops on hook]

Step 2: Yarn over and pull up another loop i.e. ch 1. This creates the first “chain” in your foundation row. [still 3 loops on hook]

Step 3: Yarn over and pull through all three loops to complete the first Fhdc.

Step 4: Next stitch and subsequent stitches: Yarn over, insert hook into “chain” created in Step 2, yarn over and pull up a loop. [3 loops on hook]

Step 5: Yarn over and pull up another loop i.e. ch 1. This creates the next “chain” in your foundation row. [still 3 loops on hook]

Step 6: Yarn over and pull through all three loops to complete the next fhdc.

Repeat Steps 4, 5 and 6 as required.

Making Your Fingerless Crochet Mitts Perfect For You

If you would like to adjust the circumference of your mitt then add or subtract multiples of 3 from your first row.

If you would like to adjust the length of your mitt you can work as many or as few rows of the Main Body and then add as many or as few rounds of the Top and Bottom Cuff as you like.

If you would like to adjust the size of the thumbhole then seam more or less sides of rows at the side of the mitt to get the desired size. Be sure to then work a relevant number of stitches evenly around for your Thumb Cuff.

• A ch1 at the beg does not count as a st.

• The pattern is worked in turned rows to begin with and then changes to continuous rounds for the Cuffs.

• Read through the entire pattern before beginning.

• Before you start, go through the pattern and highlight/mark the stitch and row counts that correspond to the size you are making (this will make your life much easier!).

• Make sure that you are familiar with all of the stitches in the abbreviations list before you begin.

• Instructions are given for the smallest size, with larger sizes in brackets ( ). E.g. Toddler (Child, Teen/Small Adult, Medium Adult, Large Adult)

• If an instruction does not apply to a particular size then an x is used instead of a number. E.g.  x (x, 2, 2, 3) means that the toddler and child do not apply to this instruction.

• Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each row. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous Row.
• Make sure to check your gauge before beginning using the Gauge Swatch instructions to ensure the mitt meets the desired measurements.

Toddler Size Only

Rows 8-13: Rep the Main Set Pattern.

Row 14: Rep Row 2.

Leaving a tail to seam with, break yarn and move to Side Seam.

Child Size Only

Rows 8-13: Rep the Main Set Pattern.

Rows 14-18: Rep Rows 2-6.

Leaving a tail to seam with, break yarn and move to Side Seam.

Teen/Small Adult Size Only

Rows 8-19: Rep the Main Set Pattern.

Row 20: Rep Row 2.

Leaving a tail to seam with, break yarn and move to Side Seam.

Medium Adult Size Only

Rows 8-19: Rep the Main Set Pattern.

Rows 20-22: Rep Rows 2-4.

Leaving a tail to seam with, break yarn and move to Side Seam.

Large Adult Size Only

SIDE SEAM

All Sizes

With WS facing you, fold in half and line up the sides of the rows of the Main Body.

Using the tail from the Last Row, seam with your preferred method (I used a whip stitch) for 2 (2, 4, 4, 4) rows from the top.

Using the tail from the First Row, seam with your preferred method (I used a whip stitch) for 8 (12, 8, 10, 12) rows from the bottom.

This will leave a thumbhole of 4 (4, 8, 8, 8) rows. You can adjust this to be any size you like.

BOTTOM CUFF

All Sizes

With the RS facing, join yarn to the first st of Row 1 of Main Body (where it is now seamed) to begin the Bottom Cuff.

Round 1: ch1, sc in each st around, do not join, work in continuous rounds now. [24 (27, 30, 33, 36)]

Rounds 2-3 (3, 5, 5, 5): sc in blo of each around.

Break yarn at the end of the last round.

TOP CUFF

All Sizes

With the RS facing, join yarn to the first st of the Last Row of Main Body (where it is now seamed) to begin the Top Cuff.

Round 1: ch1, sc in each st around, do not join, work in continuous rounds now. [24 (27, 30, 33, 36)]

Rounds 2-x (x, 5, 5, 5): sc in blo of each around.

Break yarn at the end of the last round.

THUMB CUFF

All Sizes

With the RS facing, join yarn to the first st of the thumb opening.

Round 1: work 10 (10, 16, 18, 20) sc evenly around thumbhole (or your desired amounts of stitches), work in continuous rounds now. [10 (10, 16, 18, 20)]

Rounds 2-x (3, 5, 5, 5): sc in blo of each around.

Break yarn at the end of the last round. Weave in all ends to complete.
