I was delighted to be asked to take part in the Friendship Crochet Along 2021 and am so excited to share my Cross Puff Stitch Crochet Square with you today!
I’ve always loved designing crochet motifs and then especially turning them into blankets and in this fabulous CAL you can get 40 different square motif crochet patterns to do whatever you like with. They are all packed with textured crochet stitches and so are great for blankets, pillows, bags and even fun garments too.
I’ll be sharing the full pattern for my puff stitch crochet square here in this blogpost but you can download the PDF for free until the end of the crochet along in April 2021. You can find all the details here in the blogpost for that too.
(This post may contain affiliate links which I will earn a small commission from if you choose to click and purchase anything from. I will only ever link to products and services I believe in and it is at no extra cost to you as a customer. It helps me to keep HanJan going and to keep publishing new free patterns for you to enjoy, so thank you!)
About the Cross Puff Stitch Crochet Square
I used to be so intimidated by puff stitches as they always seemed too tight and as if I was always fighting the yarn to get them through. I spent some time practising and realised that if I loosened my tension, even just slightly, it made the world of difference!
I also found that using a crochet hook that I was really comfortable with helped too (that’s true with any stitch though and not just a puff stitch).
The other thing I found with puff stitches is that spacing them out works a treat. If they are bunched right next to each other, not only do they use loads of yarn but they also don’t sit as neatly as if you space them out.
All of this was my inspiration for this crochet square, it has just enough puff stitch detail in to add the texture I wanted but also has some back loop detailing to create another direction of texture and is finished off with a ribbed post stitch border too.

Video Tutorial
I’ve put together a video tutorial to walk you through the whole square as I know lots of people find it really helpful.
Watch it here >>> puff stitch square video tutorial.
Yarn
To crochet the square I originally used Scheepjes Cahlista, which is 100% cotton, 50g/85m and so lovely to work, with however I know it is tricky to get hold of at the moment.
I would recommend using Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran, which is also 100%, 50g/85m and also has the most lovely colour options available.
I used around 15g of each colour: Peach Orange and Melon Sorbet.
Another great alternative yarn is Creative Cotton Aran by Rico which is 100% Cotton and 50g/85m.
Both of these yarns come in a beautiful range of colours so you can really personalise yours if you like!
Tension and Sizing
The finished square measures 9 inches by 9 inches.
13 sts and 11 rows = 10cm by 10cm over main stitch repeat.
