Perfect for just about any task, the Holbourne Mitts are a sophisticated, detailed pair of stylish crochet hand warmers that leave your fingers free for your craft whilst keeping your hands warm and nimble.
In sizes small, medium and large, they use crochet in the round with front post stitch work and seamless thumb shaping, they are a quick and easy project you will make again and again.
You can carry on reading to find the free pattern here in this blogpost or purchase an ad-free, printable PDF version of the Holbourne Mitts crochet pattern in my pattern store to download and print.
About the Crochet Hand Warmers
I designed the Holbourne Mitts exclusively for the Crochet Summit 2021 as a fun project to teach everyone. I wanted to create something that would perhaps stretch the knowledge of some people but that would be manageable for everyone to achieve.
The summit is now over but you can still get a VIP access pass to the whole thing if you’d like to! There are so many classes included and it’s a great deal 🙂
As many of you know, I love designing crochet hand warmers and mittens and each year I publish more and more. I just can’t stop myself!
As a Mum of young boys they are perfect for me as I always need my fingers out to wipe, pick up, carry, do whatever is needed but still like to wear something on my hands to keep them toasty.

Yarn
To make the Holbourne Mitts I used Alpaca Cloud DK by WeCrochet which is 100% baby alpaca, 112m/50g and the most beautifully soft yarn.
I used:
2 balls of Leonardo.
A great alternative yarn is Studio DK yarn by Deramores which is also 100% acrylic and fabulous to work with too.
Both of these yarns come in a beautiful range of colours and the PDF Pattern has other option ideas too.
Tension and Sizing
The crochet hand warmers come in size small, medium and large.
Circumference: S=15cm, M=18cm, L=21cm, length 19cm for all sizes.
14.5 sts and 15 rounds = 10cm by 10cm over US hdc/UK htr swatch.
Materials
Along with your yarn, you will need the following:
- 4mm/G crochet hook – my favourites are Furls Streamline Swirl crochet hooks or Clover Amour crochet hooks.
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Stitch markers if desired
Glossary and Abbreviations
ch(s) – chain(s)
ss – slip stitch
RS – right side
WS – wrong side
sk – skip
rep – repeat
FP – front post
Crochet Stitches
To make the stylish crochet hand warmers you will need to know how to crochet in the round the following crochet stitches:
Standard UK Crochet Term | Standard US Crochet Term |
dc – double crochet | sc – single crochet |
htr – half treble | hdc – half double crochet |
tr – treble crochet | dc – double crochet |
Pattern Notes
The mitts are worked in rounds throughout with shaping for the thumbs added within the pattern.
A ch1 at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch.
To make the joining of rounds neater always join the yarn from the back of the stitch to complete each round.
Work in the back loop only (blo) of any UK htr/US hdc stitch from Round 4 onwards.
