The Soothing Stripes Blanket is the perfect project for anyone from beginner to pro crocheter who enjoys the soothing mindfulness that the craft can bring. It uses the simplest of crochet stitches in a front and back loop combination to get the most wonderful textured blanket to keep little ones (or even big ones) cosy and warm.

With endless colour and size possibilities the choice is yours, tailor it to your desires (or yarn stash!). I made the blanket to measure 60cm by 90cm but you can just add or subtract any number of stitches and rows to make it any size you like.

I designed this crochet blanket when my little boy was really small and I decided I needed something that I could just pick up at any time of the day or night and work on without thinking. There are only two stitches used in the whole blanket – the double crochet (UK)/single crochet (US) and the slip stitch. I’ve added a photo tutorial to show you exactly how to work these and also how to find the front and back loop of the stitch to make the beautiful texture of the blanket.

The whole thing is edged with a reverse stitch (sometimes called a crab stitch) but if you don’t fancy tackling that then just adding a simple double/single crochet border would be perfect.

The Yarn

I used Deramores Studio DK (100% acrylic,  250m/100g) for this blanket as it’s lovely to work with and gives a really soft and smooth finish with beautiful stitch definition.

You will need:

2 balls each of Green Tea and Pearl

1 ball each of Topaz, Ocean, Mist, Light Pink and Fuchsia

Finding the right yarn for your projects can be tricky sometimes and depends on so many things like fibre content, yarn weight, budget, colour choices and more. I’ve put together a guide for the best yarn for crochet blankets to help you discover the things I’ve learnt over the years as both a designer and maker that help me choose the perfect one.

Materials

Along with the yarn you will also need:

A 7mm/K crochet hook

Needle

Scissors

Tension

19st and 21 rows = 10cm by 10cm

Finished Size
